One thing stands between us and our dream.
I’m sure that most of you know by now that Stacey and I are trying to start up our own photography buisiness. We’ve got a modest portfolio going, I’m working on a website, and we’ve got a name. All we need is our DBA license, and we’ll be set! The only problem with that is that it’s going to cost roughly $130-$150, and we just don’t have that right now. So, we wait. We can’t legally use our name when taking photos, so we’re “building our portfolio” with scattered appointments.
I think that we have the prices worked out finally and we’ve done lots of comparing and searching of photographers in our area to stay fair and competitive. I don’t want to undercut the people who’ve been around for a while, and I certainly don’t want to overcharge people. Portrait photography is expensive no matter where you go, and if it isn’t, (think Wal*Mart) they lure you in with the $7.99 package but talk you into spending $50 anyways. Even then, you get at the most two poses, and if the first pose that they take didn’t get a smile, then oh well!
We don’t do that. We snap away until we have the perfect shots. I took 178 pictures of Brennan to make sure that I got a handfull of great photos. We did different poses, different angles, different clothing. Sure, it took a lot longer, since we aren’t in a studio and don’t have a cut-and-paste system, but the portraits turned out SO much nicer than anything I could ever expect to get of my kids in a studio. Some good sunlight and a cute face are all that we need to capture those perfect moments.
We also don’t just do babies and children, although that will probably be our main customer base. People love portraits of their kids. But husbands also like the boudoir-style photos of thier wives. Wives love family portraits. Pets look great behind the lense, also! The possibilities in this business are endless. We might wind up doing wedding photography, or being commissioned by the county or city to take photos of events as freelance photographers. Or, it could all bust and we’ll have some awesome memories. You never know.
I guess that I’m just super excited about this. Opportunities like this don’t come often for most people, and I want to make the most of it. This might be our one chance!
